SAN LORENZO de EL ESCORIAL, Spain— “I believe everything is perfect—perfect synchronization,” said renowned painter Eduardo Santos Guada after attending Shen Yun. He added that the performance was “impeccable,” expressing particular admiration for its precision and artistic coordination.

Santos Guada is a well-known painter, printmaker, and sculptor whose works are noted for using light and shadow to portray the connection between natural landscapes and inner emotion. A member of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, he has been selected multiple times for major exhibitions.

On the evening of Feb. 26, 2026, he attended the performance by Shen Yun New York Company at the Teatro Auditorio San Lorenzo de El Escorial in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain, together with José Rafael Rojas Romero, a tourism technician.

Shen Yun’s orchestra blends Western and Eastern instruments, creating a distinctive musical expression. Mr. Santos said he greatly enjoyed the music. “The wonderful thing is that it’s live. ... That is, there is an orchestra. You can always feel that,” he said. He also noted the presence of traditional Chinese instruments and expressed curiosity: “I don’t think Chinese music has all the instruments we see there.”
The tenor’s solo and piano accompaniment left a deep impression on Mr. Santos, who described a spiritual resonance in the performance. “Yes, with the divine. Starting from the human, yes. Very well interpreted. And the pianist, fantastic,” he said.
Shen Yun was formed by a group of leading classical Chinese artists in 2006 in New York. Now in its 20th year of operation, Shen Yun is on its annual global tour with eight equally large companies, bringing audiences worldwide exhilarating performances that aim to revive China’s divinely inspired culture.
Mr. Rojas Romero was equally enthusiastic. “Everything has been fantastic so far. Ideal. I think it’s very good, and I’m very happy to be here and to see it,” he said. He also praised the production elements: “The costumes are fantastic, and the staging is ideal. And the story is also very beautiful.” He enjoyed one of the stories from Chinese literature, the Monkey King dance. “It’s marvelous,” he said.

He was especially impressed by Shen Yun’s animated backdrop. “Fantastic. And it’s very well done when they come out of the screen and become physical,” he said.

Shen Yun’s animated digital backdrops depict breathtaking landscapes and vivid scenes of Chinese society, both ancient and contemporary. Perfectly synchronized with the live performance, they create a visually engaging and immersive experience.

Through its refined stage artistry, Shen Yun presents traditional Chinese culture in vivid form. Mr. Santos found the storytelling meaningful and sensitive: “Interesting, very sensitive, everything. All the stories have a sensitivity,” Mr. Rojas Romero added, “It’s very well created. The music is fantastic.”

Upon learning that Shen Yun is not permitted to perform in mainland China, Mr. Santos expressed regret. “It’s a pity. Culture has to be for everyone. You can’t say what should be seen and what should not. That’s a political system—we can’t get into that. It’s a pity that they can’t see it. Censorship is always fatal for creation.”
