BIRMINGHAM, UK—The evening of Jan. 3 at the International Convention Centre was filled with excitement as the audience watched Shen Yun Performing Arts, among them child psychiatrist Dr. Himanshu Shekhar.

“It was something I never expected, that I would see a show which is spectacular,” he said.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revitalize the 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture of China before communism.

“All the history that you talked about—5,000 years old. That’s really great, actually. It’s nice to have this old culture coming back and keeping it alive,” he said.

“I think it’s a good thing. It’s a whole circle that goes around. People forget about the old traditions, and then it comes back.”

China’s traditional culture is deeply spiritual, and Dr. Shekhar noted that spirituality has a place in everyone’s lives. “You know, that’s something because I’m a scientific person. I’ve studied science. There are relationships between science and spirituality.”

“It’s just that we have not deciphered it as yet. I am a believer that there is spirituality,” he said.

“There are good things in those cultures and traditions. If you do such dances, [this is] such way of practicing old traditions, and you can keep yourself healthy,” he said.

High Performance Standards

Shen Yun’s performers, especially the dancers, are trained to meet high performance standards.

Dr. Shekhar said he appreciated the training demonstrated on stage: “Keeping things in time and rhyming and rhythming. Everything is so fantastic. I like the dances. Very, very elegant.”

“And dancers were all in time, in tune. And that was so good to see,” Dr. Shekhar said. “So many dancers together, and, you know, to be in time, it’s fantastic.”

Shen Yun performers are trained and live in New York State, and not in China. Although the stories and dances are based on Chinese culture, Shen Yun is banned in China and is unable to perform there.

“It’s great to see people doing these things and carrying on the Chinese tradition in New York, and actually spreading it all over the world,” Dr. Shekhar said.

Dr. Shekhar noted how the audience was respectful throughout the theater. “Generally, when I go to see [shows in] theatres, people are always taking photos, clicking and lots of sound.”

“But here, pin drop silence. You can concentrate on the things that actually—the really, really hard work—has gone into those artists’ [training],” he said.

Dr. Shekhar offered his support for Shen Yun’s continued success. “I wish you really all the best. ... It was mesmerizing for us!”
