PITTSBURGH—The audience at each performance during an extended run from April 4 through 17 at The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts showered Shen Yun Performing Arts with praise.

Anita Dressel, CEO of a healthcare IT company, said, “I just think it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s interesting to see these classic and ethnic dances from China. The dancers are superb and the costumes are beautiful.”

Ron Fletcher, a commissioning manager, said Shen Yun “is a beautiful experience, and you must not miss it.”

“If you don’t travel, this is just like traveling. If you do not travel, you only read one page of your book. And this opens many eyes,” he said.

According to entrepreneur Patrick Mercie, Shen Yun’s presentation of Chinese culture shows old-fashioned values that belong in every culture.

“It reminds me actually of the old world of living, the simple way, the very divine culture,” he said. “A lot of colors, very hopeful. That’s a good message. Yes, it’s very enlightening and refreshing. It’s a feel-good feeling.”

Shen Yun’s live orchestra appealed to many in the Pittsburgh audience. The orchestra uses a unique combination of Western and Eastern instruments that audience members enjoy.

Music professor Anne Patterson said, “It’s such a beautiful blending of cultures to bring these instruments, which are things that you could actually look at and say, ‘oh, that’s different from our music in this respect, but on the other hand, it’s exactly the same as ours in another way.’”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the traditional Chinese culture of 5,000 years before it was suppressed by the present communist regime.

Philosophy professor Michael Healy said, “It’s beautiful that this group of creative artists are able to keep it alive and represent it and tell the world something of the truth.”

“I would recommend this show 100 percent; it’s worth every penny,” Mr. Healy said. “The costumes and the wonderful coordination with the background screen—I don’t know how [they] do that, but it’s really worth it. I would encourage everybody to see this.”

The young dancers’ dedication and love for performing resonated with Donna Reed, a dental assistant.

“I just admire the dedication of the dancers and the costuming and how the silks just flow,” Mrs. Reed said. “They’re all so incredible. Just the dedication is amazing.”

“In today’s world, you just don’t see that a whole lot—young people being dedicated,” she said. “It just gives you hope for the future. I can’t say enough good about the show.”

Mrs. Reed also expressed her appreciation for all the people involved in producing Shen Yun.

“They are all blessed with many talents, even down to the people who do the costuming, the technicians who do the screen behind it, the lighting. It’s a whole production.”

There are still opportunities to see Shen Yun in the greater Pittsburgh area. It can be seen in Philadelphia, Providence, Rhode Island, and Spartanburg, South Carolina, in May.
