RALEIGH, North Carolina—Shen Yun Performing Arts raised the curtain at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts on March 7. Audience members said Shen Yun gave them a glimpse of the brilliance of traditional Chinese culture from before communism.

John Gauthier, a company vice president, said, “It’s just unbelievable. It far exceeded my expectations on the timing of everything and the beauty of it. And then to see the cast at the end wasn’t as big as you think it was, a lot of people playing different roles and it was just beautiful. It was well, well worth it. I would recommend it for everybody.”

Tracy Hollister, a consultant, said, “I don’t know how they did it, where they had the screen and the people flew in, and then it turned into people, and then the people jumped over and then flew away on the screen. I still don’t know how that works, but that was amazing.”

Melissa Claybrook, a business owner, said, “It is amazing. I mean, it’s choreographed beautifully. You can tell that these people have put in years of hard work to learn the skill to be on that stage, and so it’s much more impressive than any other show that I’ve seen in a long time.”

Joe Barber, a company CEO, said, “I was just very impressed. The overall athleticism it took to be out there for as long as they were and doing as much as they were was just really impressive.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from “China before communism” through classical Chinese dance, music, and storytelling. Each piece in the performance explored themes of culture, divinity, and faith, which deeply resonated with audience members.

Ms. Hollister said, “I think it’s amazing. And I didn’t realize there was such an association with divinity, and it was so amazing.” She added, “It makes me think about what an amazing culture there was prior to communism.”

“We’re just glad to see something here, home in the States here, of this magnitude. So we’re so grateful,” Mr. Gauthier said. “It was so good to see that portrayed, the music, the two singers that they had, singing their songs about the Creator and going back and being with the Creator was very inspiring for us.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun has been touring the world since 2006, and has grown to eight different companies. Shen Yun currently cannot perform in China due to the regime’s brutal persecution of faith.

Mr. Gauthier said, “It’s unbelievable the journey, the way it started, and then to be oppressed and put down, and then to come to here to this country, and to be able to sing and dance and show us what really went on, and the hope for the future of their country.”

Ms. Hollister said, “I’m really grateful for it. It’s courageous and it’s absolutely tragic. Here in America, we don’t think that we could possibly be subject to that, but somehow, our country is complicit in it, and I want to learn more about that, because we’ve got to put an end to it.”

Mr. Gauthier said, “We realize there are such hard workers, and this isn’t a job. This is something they love. But in the meantime, we just wish them the best to press on and press forward, that their rewards are yet to come.”

Shen Yun will next perform in Salt Lake City and Columbus.
