Musician Calls Shen Yun’s Orchestra ‘Mesmerizing’

TEMPE, Ariz.—Musician Barbara Greenspan and her friend Monte Anderson, a doctor, were happy to attend Shen Yun Performing Arts’s New York Company at the ASU Gammage Theater on Sunday, March 9.

“It’s very interesting, certainly far different from anything I’ve ever seen before,” said Ms. Greenspan. “The costuming is superb. The dancers are excellent. It’s a very enjoyable show.”

Shen Yun is based in New York and was founded in 2006. “Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,” according to the company’s website.

Mr. Anderson noticed and commented on the skill of Shen Yun’s dancers.

“I loved the precision of the dance, and obviously these people are very well-trained,” he said.

Ms. Greenspan loved the choreography, saying it was “terrific” and “very, very good.”

From the perspective of someone who has sung opera, Ms. Greenspan was very impressed with the live, full orchestra.

“I was just saying to my friend that the music is mesmerizing,” she said. “It’s very different from what we normally hear in the States, but I’ve been very interested and wanting to come to this.”

Mr. Anderson also loved the orchestra and both friends complimented the interactive animated backdrops as well.

“I love the combination of the Chinese sound with the conventional orchestra, and I think they’re really a good orchestra, and I thought that the animations were really very, very good, and the colors and movements make it really enjoyable,” said Mr. Anderson.

“Wonderful, absolutely,” said Ms. Greenspan about the backdrops. “The concept I think is outstanding.”

Mr. Anderson enjoyed the announcers, who came in between each dance or song to introduce a little bit of Chinese culture and what was coming up next. He said they were very good and added to the performance.

Ms. Greenspan said she would come and see Shen Yun again and recommend it to her friends.

“It’s certainly very worthwhile coming to see,” she said.
