CHEYENNE, Wyo.—Cheryl Anderson, an accountant, believes that her daughters should have culture incorporated into their lives. And there is no better way to do so than bringing her daughters to Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“I loved it. Both of my daughters have danced all their lives, and they’ve both also been involved in theater production growing up, so this was a great experience for them as well,” said Ms. Anderson.

She shared that she drove two and a half hours from Nebraska to see Shen Yun in Cheyenne.

“I’m always up for an adventure, and I always try to find ways to incorporate culture into my daughters’ lives,” shared Ms. Anderson.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Each period of Chinese history has something worth putting on stage, so Shen Yun creates an all-new production every year.

“It’s definitely something you should see, and you should see it every year. And it’s so exciting to see that it changes every year. That’s wonderful. I’m looking forward to next year already. In fact, we might go to Rapid City as well,” said Ms. Anderson.

Shen Yun presents a China before communism. Shen Yun also uses dance to raise awareness about the crimes happening in China today. Specifically, the organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners.

“I think [my daughters] really enjoyed it. I think the one thing that shocked them was to see the piece about people still being killed for their organs. That was very shocking, but yet it was a good message to get out there to people to see that,” remarked Ms. Anderson.

Mackenzie Anderson, a student studying speech pathology, shared that Shen Yun’s dancing was impressive in the way that it could tell stories without the use of words.

“It was amazing. Although there were no words being spoken, we were able to perfectly know what was going on in the storylines with each individual story,” said Ms. Mackenzie Anderson.

Shen Yun’s storytelling comes to life with handcrafted costumes, a live orchestra, and an animated backdrop.

“The costuming was wonderful. I love the combination of the background, the theater part of it, and then the dance involved in the music. Just wonderful,” said Ms. Cheryl Anderson.

“It was awesome, the orchestra, all the dancers, everything was perfectly lined up,” added Ms. Mackenzie Anderson.

Among Shen Yun’s musicians, the erhu, a two-stringed instrument, has a moment to shine under the spotlight.

“I was very impressed that she could play the instrument with two strings and play that kind of music. That was just amazing, amazing. The sound was just wonderful,” said Ms. Cheryl Anderson.
