MEXICO CITY, Mexico—On the afternoon of May 3, Mexican political commentator and award-winning author Raúl Tortolero attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. It was his second time seeing Shen Yun and once again, he left deeply impressed by both its artistic excellence and spiritual message.

“I think it is a fantastic, poetic performance with a very high level of professionalism,” Mr. Tortolero said. “The overall presentation was truly impressive.”

Mr. Tortolero is a Mexican writer, lecturer, and political consultant who specializes in geopolitical and social analysis. He is the president of the “Hispanic New Right of Latin America,” founder of the “International Cristero Army,” and formerly served as Secretary of Communications for the National Executive Committee of Mexico’s National Action Party (PAN). In 2007, he received Mexico’s National Journalism Award from the United Nations Office in Mexico.

Speaking about Shen Yun’s mission to revive traditional Chinese culture, Mr. Tortolero said its significance extends far beyond art.

“It is a great celebration and a fusion of the best of East and West,” he said. “China’s millennia-old culture must be preserved and should not be destroyed by any regime. This is not only a revival of ancient traditions, but also an expression of peace and friendship between China and the world.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired heritage and share with audiences the beauty of “China before communism.”
The performance takes audiences on a journey through China, from ancient times to the present-day, where Shen Yun depicts the suppression of tradition, faith, and freedom of speech under the communist regime, as well as the courage of those who remain steadfast in their faith.

Mr. Tortolero emphasized the important role of art in confronting political oppression.

“We must resist totalitarianism through art, not through weapons,” he said. “The Chinese Communist Party is a dictatorship that should be opposed, but through art and poetry, not violence.”

Mr. Tortolero also urged people around the world not to confuse the Chinese people with the ruling Chinese communist regime.

“The Chinese people are wonderful, full of love and kindness,” he said. “I believe Falun Dafa plays an important role in restoring traditional values. We hope they can continue performing year after year—we truly enjoy watching them.”

He expressed his profound respect for the artistic director of Shen Yun and its artists, praising their decades of unwavering dedication.

“Shen Yun is preserving China’s traditions, legends, and wisdom,” he said. “Your work is of great value, as it allows us in the West to see China’s most beautiful side. Today’s China is under a regime that violates human rights, but here we see the rescue and transmission of culture.”

Speaking from his Catholic faith, Mr. Tortolero added that the spiritual message of Shen Yun resonates with his beliefs.

“Human beings have a divine origin—we are children of the Creator,” he said. “Congratulations, and may God bless you to continue this beautiful and deeply human work.”
