MURCIA, Spain—Isabel Borrego Cortés, member of the Spanish national parliament, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on March 28 at Auditorio Víctor Villegas.

“The entire set design is impressive, as is the use of audiovisual media, the colors, and the personality,” Ms. Borrego said.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism” and to revive people’s connection to 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“It’s a very interesting way to learn about China’s history through its art, and I appreciate how relaxing the show is,” Ms. Borrego expressed.

Shen Yun uses classical Chinese dance to tell stories from China’s five millennia. Its dance stories also portray the modern true story of Falun Dafa practitioners being persecuted for their faith in China. Falun Dafa is a peaceful practice that teaches the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.

Ms. Borrego observed how Falun Dafa practitioners “fought for their faith, how they struggled to keep their faith against all odds. That part is very interesting, and it’s a very relatable experience in China.”

Regional Deputy for the Popular Party in the Regional Assembly of Murcia, Luz Marina Lorenzo, was also in the audience this evening.

“Impressive. I came last year, and I could not miss it. It truly is unmissable, a unique performance,” Mrs. Lorenzo said.

With 5,000 years of history and literature to draw on, Shen Yun can put on an all-new production every year.

“[Shen Yun] combines [emotions] very well, there were moments of humor, but there were also more serious moments in which the suffering of all those people who have gone through it is also conveyed, and then it reaches us as spectators and moves you so deeply,” Mrs. Lorenzo said.

China has been through many dynastic changes. It also has an array of ethnic minorities. Mrs. Lorenzo was struck by the variety in Chinese culture.

“There were several moments that really caught my attention, a culture of so many centuries—it is so vast, with so many regions, with so many dynasties, and they convey it in such a beautiful way,” she said.

Member of the Murcia regional parliament, Antonio Martínez Pastor, also experienced Shen Yun this evening.
“The show, once again, surpasses itself. It’s impressive; it is a sublime spectacle that highlights ancient Chinese tradition and also combines elements of traditional Chinese dance. A very beautiful show to watch,” Mr. Martínez said.

Although Shen Yun is sharing the beauty of Chinese culture with the world, Shen Yun is unable to perform in China.

Mr. Martínez expressed that he was impressed with the dance depicting the persecution of Falun Dafa practitioners.

“The piece is quite striking, because in an evolved 21st-century society.  [When the government] restricts freedoms, both freedom of expression and the freedom to practice whatever spiritual beliefs one chooses—well, I believe that goes against human nature,” he said.

All three members of parliament congratulated Shen Yun for its success in conveying Chinese culture to audiences around the world.
