METAIRIE, La.—Josh Adamo, a chef, and Roxie Bruno, a retired flight attendant, sawShen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 14 at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center.

“It was pretty amazing, the discipline, the choreography, and the practice. It was nice to watch. The music and the whole performance did tell a story, and I felt like I learned something. It was great to see,” Mr. Adamo said.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I feel like I learned more about the culture before communism. And I was impressed with the faith of the people,” said Ms. Bruno, who is the mother of Mr. Adamo’s girlfriend.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“It was incredible. It was captivating; it really was. I love watching people who are well-disciplined in any discipline. It’s really enjoyable to see how hard-working they are,” Mr. Adamo said.

Many audience members love the beauty in Shen Yun, but Mr. Adamo loved the humor as well.

“There’s a bit of comedy in there. It was funny as well,” he said.

Shen Yun promotes traditional values through dance stories and songs. Both Mr. Adamo and Ms. Bruno agreed that traditional values are important to uphold in today’s society.

“I think a lot of classic and old school traditional mentalities is the way forward. I really, honestly believe that, and I think just seeing that being performed on stage was cool to see,” Mr. Adamo said.

Ms. Bruno said the piece about increasing technology in modern life was relatable.

“It made me think about the past when I did not have a cell phone and how people communicated better and had more family. I think all cultures feel like they’re losing that,” Ms. Bruno shared.

She also shared her faith in a higher power. Shen Yun reminded Ms. Bruno that we need to have faith.

“I don’t know there’s anything a man could do. But I think that God’s powerful. Another thing today I was thinking about—anxiety. Our bodies are peaceful, but when we think about the future, we start to get anxious. So we have to put our faith in the Creator,” she said.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in bel canto technique, and the digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung.

“The female singer was incredible. Her voice was outstanding,” Ms. Bruno said.
