LONDON, UK—Gagandeep Walia, founder of an AI consultancy company based in London’s financial district, said he felt a deep personal resonance after watching Shen Yun Performing Arts, adding that the experience conveyed hope and offered a meaningful way forward in today’s society.

On the evening of Jan. 13, Shen Yun Performing Arts launched its UK tour in London at the Eventim Apollo, with Mr. Walia in attendance.

With more than 20 years of global professional experience, Mr. Walia works as an enterprise data management architect, helping internationally renowned multinational companies improve management efficiency and performance.

Having visited the Hammersmith Apollo many times, Mr. Walia said that while the venue itself was impressive, it was the performance that truly stood out—and the experience far exceeded what he had imagined.
“I didn’t know what to expect, to be honest,” he said. “A friend advised me to go and also shared some background reading about the history and what the show was about.”

As the performance unfolded, he said he came to realize how the sequence of individual pieces itself conveyed a coherent narrative.

“What they showed, and the way they showed it—the sequencing, the choreography, the dancing, the music—it all came together as one complete presentation,” he said. “I call it a show, but I don’t actually think it was just a show.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture, allowing audiences around the world to experience China before communism. In the performance, the beauty of traditional culture is at times underscored through contrast with elements of modern society.

This contrast struck a chord with Mr. Walia.

“It is extremely important to understand the true picture of today’s society,” he said. “We get lost in our technology- and mobile-driven interactions.”

He was also impressed by how seamlessly the elements of music, costume, symmetry, and movement were integrated.

“I was surprised by how well it was brought together and how well choreographed it was,” he said. “The music, the costumes, the symmetry—everything was a complete offering.”

Mr. Walia said the performance left him wanting to learn more about traditional Chinese culture and history.

“After watching it, you want to dig deeper,” he said. “You want to understand the culture, why the stories were put together, and the history of China.”

He further emphasized that Shen Yun helps people recognize “there are many preconceptions we need to get rid of” about China and Chinese people. China, he said, is “a beautiful country with beautiful people,” adding that those nurtured through traditional culture remain genuinely kind and willing to do good.

“Even if you do see evil, if you do experience evil,” he said, “the way Shen Yun—and Falun Gong—shows it is that even toward people who cause you great harm, there is still hope and a way forward.”

Reflecting on his own life experiences, Mr. Walia said the performance offered a rare reminder of hope in a world often driven by greed and conflict.

“This performance shows that there is still hope in humankind today,” he said.

Mr. Walia said he wholeheartedly wanted to share his experience in hopes of recommending Shen Yun to a wider audience.

“If you know anyone who enjoys culture, enjoys diversity, and wants to get away from their mobile phone, I absolutely advocate this show,” he said.

Shen Yun is often described as “a show that truly matters,” a sentiment Mr. Walia said resonated with him deeply.

“So please, if you are reading this, I strongly advise you to go and see it, and also read the supporting material,” he said. “It may change your life and your perspective on people in today’s world.”
