MEMPHIS—“I think it’s wonderful. I haven’t been to anything like it before,” said Albert McLean. “It’s beautiful.”

Mr. McLean saw Shen Yun for the first time at Cannon Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 5. He is a partner in a Memphis law firm, who, according to the firm’s website, volunteers with the Memphis Area Legal Service’s Attorney of the Day Program and Pro Bono Legal Clinic.

His wife, Ann McLean, suggested they come to the performance. She said she admired the dancers’ precision and grace, and said the way they used ribbons and long, flowing sleeves was beautiful and elegant.

“And the aerials were beautiful. The combination of the different elements and dance is very, very beautiful,” Mrs. McLean said. She said she also saw one of her daughters’ ballet teachers at the performance.

Mr. McLean, who is also a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 Mediator, found that Shen Yun made him want to understand more about the deeper meanings behind Chinese culture and history. He said he was reading the program during intermission in order to learn more.

The songs, with their spiritual themes, conveyed a sense that Shen Yun is about more than just beauty, but about deeper meaning, according to Mr. McLean.

“The substance of what the songs have been about is meaningful,” he said.

He said he was glad the artists worked to share their culture with the rest of the world.
