TOULOUSE, France—Following a Shen Yun performance at the Zénith in Toulouse on the afternoon of April 28, several audience members expressed their admiration for the artists’ virtuosity, the production’s visual beauty, and the spiritual depth of scenes inspired by China’s millennia-old civilization.

Among them, Alain Lavigne, a former executive in the development department at the Toulouse City Hall’s health insurance fund, said he was captivated by the world brought to life on stage.

“So much imagination, so many colors, and so much movement—it’s a real pleasure to watch,“ he said. ”And then there’s the precision of the choreography… everything is so polished; it’s perfect.”

Each year, Shen Yun Performing Arts presents an entirely new program inspired by 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Through classical Chinese dance—one of the world’s most comprehensive art forms—the company brings legends, imperial dynasties, and traditional values to life. This ancient art form combines technical mastery, expressiveness, and inner grace. Passed down through centuries of tradition, classical Chinese dance features jumps, spins, balancing acts, and movements of great finesse, while emphasizing posture, elegance, and emotion.

This technical excellence did not go unnoticed by Mr. Lavigne, who was also impressed by the live musical accompaniment.

“I didn’t expect there to be so many musicians, and the quality… at a certain point, you don’t even realize there’s an orchestra like that, one that really transports you. Oh yes, it was absolutely beautiful,” he said.

The Shen Yun Performing Arts orchestra is truly one of a kind: it blends the sounds of a Western symphony orchestra with traditional Chinese instruments, creating a unique sonic palette that enhances both epic scenes and more contemplative moments.
Beyond the artistic performance, it was Shen Yun’s spiritual dimension that particularly moved Mr. Lavigne. “We live in a world where there isn’t much room for the spiritual or for anything traditional. I’m attached to tradition, and I think it’s great to bring all that back to life,” he said.

Traditional values indeed play a central role in Shen Yun’s performances: loyalty, benevolence, bravery, and reverence for the sacred. These principles, drawn primarily from Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, have shaped Chinese civilization for millennia.

Brigitte and Alain Genoist, both retirees, also enjoyed the performance. Mrs. Genoist, a former accountant and property manager, highlighted the overall beauty of the performance during intermission. “The dancing, the costumes—everything is so lovely. The music, too, especially since I really like classical music. So far, it’s perfect,” she said.

Her husband, for his part, marveled at the dancers’ physical prowess. “Their coordination, too—the feats, the magnificent jumps. They’re incredibly strong,” he said.

Chinese classical dance does indeed require years of rigorous training. It develops flexibility, strength, and balance, as well as what Chinese tradition calls “yun”—that is, inner poise, artistic flair, and the ability to convey genuine emotion.

Mrs. Genoist also sensed a special sincerity in the artists. “It seems as though they’ve stayed true to themselves and are trying to convey something they truly believe in,” she said.

When asked about the ideas conveyed by traditional Chinese culture, she spoke of values that resonate universally. “Trying to be a little more Zen, trying to understand others, to be more measured … I really like that aspect,” she said.

Both would gladly recommend the performance, which Mrs. Genoist described as “a blend of dance, beautiful costumes, acrobatic feats, and lovely music.” As for Mr. Genoist, he’d like to return with his granddaughter, who’s passionate about dance, convinced that “she’d love it.”

Finally, for Mr. Lavigne, Shen Yun can be summed up in a few words: “A magical display of colors and movement.”
