SALT LAKE CITY—Many theatergoers in Salt Lake City, including former ballet school owner Barbara Olsen, were enthralled after experiencing Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“It just takes my breath away. Everything is just magnificent,” Barbara Olsen said, seeing the performance after her son-in-law bought her a ticket for her birthday.

Shen Yun brought 5,000 years of China’s authentic heritage to the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater from March 13 to March 18.

“The technique is outstanding. The costume and then all of the special effects. The scenery is just amazing. I love it,” Ms. Olsen said.

The performer’s energy is something that audience members notice right away.

“Man, I wish I had half of that energy,” said Stan Perkins, a consultant and a company vice president.

Mark Wood, president of Credibility Makers, was also in attendance.

“I have wanted to come and see this show for years, and it did not disappoint,” Mr. Wood said.

“It was absolutely magical. The dancers were strong and flexible and precise, and I just thought it was a magical experience,” Mr. Wood added.

Since 2006, the New York-based Shen Yun has been showcasing classical Chinese dance and culture from ‘China before communism.’ These traditions are something the Chinese regime continues to suppress, even today.

“There was some sadness knowing that there’s been oppression on some of those cultural interests that people have to pursue their beliefs,” Mr. Wood said. “It was kind of fun to see the strength of people pushing and leaning forward towards what they want to be and what they want to believe.”

Mr. Perkins noted that there is the presence of communist attitude in the country and said “To realize that there’s so much emotion, so much trust, so much faith in what we call God, in the country and still in the people themselves, it’s very moving.”

Scott Fidler, a psychologist, said he was also moved by Shen Yun.

“It takes a lot of courage to hang on to your faith in spite of, despite people potentially, being prosecuted for holding on to their faith,” Mr. Fidler said.

Aleina Peterson, a sculptor, sends heartfelt regards to Shen Yun.

“I love the message that it sent,” Ms. Peterson said.

“And just the amazement of whoever wrote this,” she added, “that they have their inspiration of creating such wonderful things that you go home with a message of hope. And the message that it sends of kindness and everything, and also learning about a new tradition.”

Ms. Olsen, who also taught ballet, believes the performance is something for people today.

“I think it’s fabulous, absolutely,” Ms. Olsen said. “I think everyone should see it.”
