COSTA MESA, Calif.—Company manager Marco Mijares was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of Shen Yun Performing Arts when he attended its evening performance on April 18 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Though this is his first time seeing Shen Yun, he has heard of the company for many years and was thrilled to finally experience it in person.

“I absolutely loved it. I highly recommend it,” he said. “I think it’s great. Keep it up.”

As one of the oldest civilizations in the world, China’s 5,000 years of history are rich with breathtaking legends and deep-rooted traditions. Yet, within just a few decades of the Chinese communists’ rise to power, this magnificent culture was destroyed.

The spread of atheism quickly eradicated the Chinese people’s belief in the divine. The cherished virtues and values once passed down through Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism disappeared almost overnight.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is dedicated to reviving this lost civilization, bringing to life the beauty and wisdom of pre-communist China through dance and music.

Mr. Migares expressed deep respect for the artists’ efforts and shared his enthusiasm to “support every single show.”

“[They’re] fighting the communist China, I love it. I’m hoping to come every single year,” he said. “It’s lovely.”

Reflecting on China’s cultural revolution in the 1960s, which pushed traditional Chinese culture to the brink of extinction, Mr. Migares remarked, “It’s really foolish because you cannot get rid of it. It doesn’t make any sense.”

He was very happy to see the artists’ commitment to restoring the divine-inspired values and spirituality of traditional China.

To have seen the performance on Good Friday made the experience even more meaningful. “It was phenomenal. It was a great day for me,” Mr. Magares said enthusiastically.

“I’m a Catholic, so I went to church this morning. I told my wife, this is a lovely day, because I started with my Catholic faith and I ended with [Shen Yun.] So, it’s great.”

Finally, he had a message for the performers: “Keep up the good work.”

“I continue to support you guys and I'll continue to spread the word myself,” he said.

This season, Shen Yun’s eight touring companies are bringing their stunning performances to over 200 cities worldwide. With a brand-new program each year, the company’s 19th anniversary marks another season full of fresh surprises for both first-time and returning audiences alike.
