SYDNEY, Australia—Peter Kim, a doctor and former deputy mayor of the City of Ryde, felt he had travelled to the wonderland after attending Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney on March 10.

“It’s so divine. I saw angels dancing in front of my eyes, and that was just an amazing experience,” he said.

“It’s a combination of mystical and magical [factors], and just absolutely fantastic.”

This was the first time that Mr. Kim had seen Shen Yun, and the two-hour journey with live music and classical Chinese dance had left him with an unforgettable experience.
The former deputy mayor praised the way Shen Yun used colours in its performance to tell timeless stories from the 5,000 years of Chinese history.

“It was the most beautiful display of colour I’ve ever seen,” he said.

“And it was [as if] I was sitting there watching an aurora and the North Star, and it was absolutely beautiful.”

Mr. Kim was struck by a performance that depicted a family of three who were persecuted by the Chinese communist regime for their belief in the spiritual practice of Falun Gong, saying the message conveyed by the story was very powerful.

He also took note of other important messages that he thought Shen Yun gave to society.

“Live with principles, go back to the original values, and try to be good,” Mr. Kim said.

A Breathtaking and Mesmerising Performance

Shelley Larner, a councillor in Sydney, was so mesmerised by what she saw during the matinee performance.
“I was holding my breath in some of the parts just to see what was happening next,” she said, noting that the whole performance was brilliant, well-choreographed, and stunning.

The councillor was also amazed by Shen Yun’s interactive backdrops, a patented invention that acted like magical windows extending and transforming the stage.

“The backdrop was beautiful, and I love how it interacted and how the dancers jumped away, and then they come back on screen,” she said.

“It was beautiful. Very clever.”

Ms. Larner was surprised to learn that all the jumping and tumbling techniques displayed by Shen Yun dancers originated from classical Chinese dance.

“I thought that was acrobatics. So it’s nice to learn that that was traditional Chinese dancing,” she said.

According to Shen Yun’s website, many classical Chinese dance techniques evolved from Chinese martial arts and opera, which had thousands of years of history, and were later introduced to Olympic gymnastics by Chinese athletes in the 1970s.

The councillor also praised Shen Yun dancers, noting that they must work very hard to be so professional and make their performance look effortless.
