HOUSTON—Jalicia Price and Ashlynn McClure both danced when they were younger. They were blown away by the beauty and precision of Shen Yun Performing Arts on Dec. 29 at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts.

“The show was amazing. All of the artists were amazing. I truly loved the performance. The history and the illusions. I was really mind blown,” said Ms. Price, a salon owner and business consultant.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists specialise in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“We both used to dance in our younger years as well. So to see the flexibility of the dancers, them being professional, them being able to run in and off the stage as quickly, the dress changes, everything was really on point and excellent. We really enjoyed it,” shared Ms. McClure-Ashford, who is an engineering manager in oil and gas.

Both Ms. Price and Ms. McClure-Ashford said the performance was “10 out of 10.”

Shen Yun’s website states that its costumes “bring back the styles of China’s different dynasties, regions, and ethnic groups.” Ms. McClure-Ashford noticed Shen Yun’s thoughtful use of color.

“The costumes were beautiful. I love the pink and green. I’m thinking it’s based on cherry blossoms,” she said, adding that she enjoyed the dance, “Peacock Paradise.”

Ms. McClure-Ashford also shared that she enjoyed the choreography of “Water Sleeves.”

“The ladies with the long sleeves—that was also beautiful. The choreography, how they throw [the sleeves] and catch it—that was really amazing,” she said.

Shen Yun is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I thought it was beautiful. I really liked how they shared the story and how they brought [Chinese culture] from back then. It was really nice,” Ms. Price said.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in bel canto technique, and Shen Yun’s digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung.

“Having the translations of the songs with the baritone and the soprano was really good,” Ms. McClure-Ashford said.

Shen Yun reminded Ms. McClure-Ashford and Ms. Price of the power of the divine.

The songs included the message of “faith in God and not moving away from God, and believing that heaven still exists,” Ms. Price said.

“We’re all one human race. And we all believe in a higher being—he’s coming back. So that was amazing to see. We’re all united [despite] whatever’s going on in the world. We’re still one human race, and we all have similar beliefs,” Ms. McClure-Ashford said.
