HOUSTON—Standing up for something you believe in isn’t always easy to do. Joey Velasquez, a tournament director, expressed his admiration for Shen Yun Performing Arts and its efforts in standing up against the tyranny they face in China.

“I like the message about stepping away from communism, not being repressed—especially now in the present. That was a good message. It was a good production. You could tell they worked really hard,” said Mr. Velasquez.

Founded in New York in 2006, Shen Yun was established by elite artists who fled persecution by the Chinese Communist Party. Their mission is to return to the world stage the glory and beauty of pre-communist China and the country’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

“I think [Shen Yun] does a good job of teaching people who don’t know about the culture, an insight of how Chinese culture is. I think it opens your eyes to different cultures,” Mr. Velasquez said.

Shen Yun’s two Masters of Ceremony provide brief introductions for each piece so that even those who are unfamiliar with Chinese culture can follow along.

“Storyline was great. The narration was really great because it helped you understand the process. So it was really essential that they had that in [the performance] to let you know what was going on. But all of them were really good,” Mr. Velasquez said.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“Costumes were amazing. The way they interacted with the screen, going back and forth, it was amazing,” Mr. Velasquez said.

Touched by Shen Yun’s positive energy, Mr. Velasquez shared that he would recommend the performance to others.

“I would recommend it to anybody. It’s very positive. I mean, the whole thing is just a great production,” he said.
