HIGH WYCOMBE, UK—Robin Sutton and Denise Sutton saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at Wycombe Swan Theatre on Feb. 26.

“This is our first time. … It’s colorful. It is classical. Very good,” said Mr. Sutton, who works in financial services.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“All the traditions shouldn’t be forgotten. It should be brought to everybody,” Mr. Sutton said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

Shen Yun is on tour for five months of the year. For the remaining time, the artists and musicians are busy perfecting the new production that they debut each season.

The audience notices Shen Yun’s attention to detail as they witness the dancers’ synchronicity and harmonious teamwork.

“Very clever. They’re very coordinated. … they’re just perfect in all their movements,” said Ms. Sutton, who also works in financial services.

Roy Carpenter and Jennifer Pash were also in the audience for this performance.

“I always wanted to come. My Christmas present was two tickets to come here,” shared Mr. Carpenter, a retired singer.

After all that he witnessed in his 82 years of life, Mr. Carpenter shared that Shen Yun still managed to surprise him.

“It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Beautiful—it takes your breath away.  It really does.”

As someone who has seen many seasons on stage, he understands the work it takes to put together a performance of Shen Yun’s caliber.

“I can imagine how much hard work must have gone into those performances. The amount of costume changes is unbelievable, beautiful!”

Mr. Carpenter hopes that Shen Yun can reach more people and give others the opportunity to see the beauty of tradition.
“It will inspire people to realize what we’ve lost in society—the beauty of traditional ways. In China, suppression has caused pain to the people who have different views. So it’s nice to see it all in the open here,”
The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“I loved the music, it was beautiful,” he said.
