GLASGOW, UK—Alistair Kirkland and Evita Vilcevska saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on Feb. 5 at the SEC Armadillo.

“Amazing. It was just a wonderful performance and a fantastic orchestra as well. Just a great show,” said Mr. Kirkland, a retired director of a business.

Ms. Vilcevska, a sales assistant, said that seeing Shen Yun was the Christmas gift she had given Mr. Kirkland, and she is very happy she made that decision.
Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

Ms. Vilcevska said that she enjoyed seeing the smiling faces of everyone on stage.

“Just hearing initially about the storyline beforehand and actually seeing it acted out was incredible. Absolutely amazing,” Mr. Kirkland said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

He said he enjoyed the “great energy” of the dancers.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“That was incredible. Didn’t even expect that. To see them disappear into the screen and then come out,” Mr. Kirkland said.

He was amazed at how the dancers interacted with the backdrop.

“I don’t know how they did it; it was somebody, as an old man, coming out as a young man,” he said. “But he didn’t even go into the screen, he was just like there, and how that happened, I will never know.”

The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“I was even saying to Alistair, I keep forgetting that actually this is the real music right there, a real orchestra,” Ms. Vilcevska said.

Although Shen Yun is sharing the beauty of Chinese culture with the world, Shen Yun is unable to perform in China.

“I’ve learned so much here,” Mr. Kirkland said, adding that it was “just wonderful.”
