PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil—On the afternoon and evening of May 9, Shen Yun Performing Arts presented two performances at the FIERGS Theater in Porto Alegre.

Porto Alegre is not only the capital of Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, but also one of the most important political, economic, and cultural centers in southern Brazil.

Among those attending the evening performance was former Brazilian federal deputy Carlos Marun. He also served as a state deputy and held the position of Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency during the Temer administration. In addition, he is a lawyer and civil engineer.

“The performance is deeply moving,” Mr. Marun said after watching Shen Yun.

Mr. Marun expressed strong appreciation for Shen Yun and its purpose. “It is a performance that demonstrates the importance of culture. It exists because there are people who want traditional culture to endure and spread throughout the world. I find that very meaningful,” he said.

“Beyond the extraordinary skill of the artists, I especially value the larger purpose behind the performance: preserving and bringing awareness to the culture of a millennia-old country like China.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired heritage and share with audiences the beauty of “China before communism.”

“I am a traditionalist. I see this as important for all nations,“ he said. ”At first, I thought it was supported by the Chinese government, but as the performance went on, I realized it was not. I think it is a wonderful show, and for us in Porto Alegre, it is a great opportunity to be able to see it here.”

Traditional Chinese culture has long been rooted in spirituality. Only in recent decades did the Chinese Communist Party impose an atheist ideology. Today, Shen Yun seeks to revive that divinely inspired heritage—an effort that has resonated with audiences worldwide.

Mr. Marun said he was among those touched by the performance’s spiritual dimension.

“I have been to China and visited the Forbidden City, which is often reflected in the stage backdrops,“ he said. ”Spirituality is present in the life of the Chinese people. I believe those who live with such a strong sense of spirituality are, in a way, happier.”

Deeply inspired by the performance, Mr. Marun concluded with a message of appreciation for the artists: “Congratulations, and thank you!”
