WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—Brittany Levy, a dance teacher and former ballet dancer, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on Feb. 2 at Kravis Center for the Performing Arts–Dreyfoos Hall.

“This is my first time seeing them perform. … very beautiful, very positive, and inspiring,” Ms. Levy said.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“I thought their characters were really strong, but as far as technique, it was super dynamic. You could see all the years and years and years of training in their lines. I even noticed the gestures, even the simple movements with the head,” Ms. Levy said.

Shen Yun’s website states that Classical Chinese dance training includes three main components—technical skill, form, and bearing, which is one of the many ways that Classical Chinese dance is different from ballet.

“I was really impressed with the synchronicity. You know someone’s really trained when it’s everything from the lift of the chin to the length of the reach of the arms. The extension was super beautiful, and it was nice to see the power and the vulnerability coming from both the men and the women,” Ms. Levy observed.

Classical Chinese dance also includes various difficult leaping and tumbling techniques. Ms. Levy was highly impressed with what Shen Yun’s artists have achieved.

“The height—from the ground up there was this beautiful freeze frame where you can see every single moment. When they’re actually going up, and their leg is extended, and their upper back is completely all the way back, it’s as if they could just grab their leg back there, but in the air. It was super,” she said.

Shen Yun uses dance to tell stories from China’s five millennia. The dancers are also trained in various Chinese ethnic and folk dance styles.

Ms. Levy shared that she enjoyed the dances ‘Peacock Paradise’ and ‘You Reap What You Sow’ because of the kindness she witnessed in them. She also noted that the dance, ‘The Steadfast Heart,’ was “heartbreaking.”
The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“The music was super incredible. I really love the musicians. I thought they were also phenomenal,” Ms. Levy said.
