NEW YORK—Ivy Dominique, known in New York’s fashion circles, and for her philanthropic efforts, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at The David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center on April 4.

Ms. Dominique was captivated the moment the curtains rose.

“It was breathtaking,” she said. “I didn’t know what to expect, and then you see not only the dancers but the visuals with it and how they disappear in and out of it. It’s amazing.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by leading Chinese artists and quickly became the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Now, with eight equally sized companies that tour the world simultaneously, Shen Yun is on a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture and the beauty of China before communism.

“Everybody is so on point. They move as one unit together,“ said Ms. Dominique. ”I just can’t say enough good things about it. It’s a beautiful show. I want to see it again because I heard it’s a different show every time.”

Ms. Dominique said that she could see the dedication of the performers on stage.

“They must practice all day, every day, to be that good. You can see that they really enjoy doing what they’re doing. You can see it on their faces as they’re performing. ”

Ms. Dominique shared that her family was from Russia and was, therefore, familiar with communism. She said that Shen Yun was inspirational to her because the performers were sharing Chinese culture where they were free to, despite not being allowed to perform in China.

“I think people should be exposed to different cultures and different practices, and this is a beautiful view,” said Ms. Dominique. “For them to come and be able to be free and showcase their spirit, it’s just a beautiful thing. I think more people should experience [it].”

Ms. Dominique added that the message she saw in Shen Yun’s performance was “that we all need to just take a moment and appreciate the world around us and be more tolerant and more willing to learn about each other.”
