CURITIBA, Brazil—On the evening of April 27, Shen Yun Performing Arts’ third local performance at Teatro Positivo in Curitiba, Brazil, was once again met with a warm and enthusiastic response from the audience.

Among those in attendance was Paraná State Appellate Judge Jorge Vargas. Deeply impressed, he said the performance invites reflection and calls for a revival of traditional values, and expressed admiration for the artistic director’s determination and courage in reviving traditional culture.

“We need to see these values reborn within us,” Mr. Vargas said. “Today, they are often forgotten because of materialism, the pursuit of immediate solutions without reflection, without nourishing the spirit. We can nourish the mind, but we also need to nourish the spirit. This kind of production makes us reflect on the value of nourishing the spirit.”

Mr. Vargas has served as an appellate judge since 2008 and is also a law professor at three universities in Paraná. He attended the performance together with his wife, Marta Vargas, a psychologist and school teacher.

Reflecting on the performance, Mr. Vargas praised its high level of precision and coordination.

“I am impressed by the quality of the show—the synchrony and harmony among the artists,” he said. “Especially that magical way of going to the other side of the screen, traveling through space, and then automatically returning to the stage. I found that synchrony very interesting.”

He also highlighted the live orchestra, noting its seamless integration with the performance.

“The orchestra performs in a very pleasant way, and the sound blends very well with the whole show. The orchestra deserves congratulations,” he said.

Mrs. Vargas likewise expressed her admiration, emphasizing the performers’ discipline.

“It is a very beautiful show—well-prepared, well-rehearsed, and it clearly reflects their culture of discipline,” she said. “It was fantastic. I liked it very much.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired heritage and share with audiences the beauty of “China before communism.”

Beyond technical excellence, Mrs. Vargas said the performance conveyed a deeper message centered on faith and higher ideals.

“I felt it presents a proposal of faith, a focus on perfection and on divine things—a call for values,” she said.

Mr. Vargas noted that the performance’s spiritual message seems to be a statement against materialism.

“It talks about our interaction with the divine,” he said. “It positions itself a bit against the theory of evolution and atheism. It presents a perspective that contrasts with more materialistic thinking. It truly does demonstrate it.”

In his view, the performance not only conveys harmony, but also offers insight into what it means to be human.

“The value of harmony is present, but even more, the sense of what is human—that it must be linked to good purposes and good feelings,” he said. “These values are very clear in the show.”

Mrs. Vargas, drawing from her perspective as a psychologist and educator, said she was inspired by the character demonstrated by the performers.

“What we take away is their confidence—they convey confidence and truth in what they do,” she said. “We truly feel they are extremely disciplined people, and I also see a strong sense of faith. They trust one another on stage.”

She also expressed her appreciation to the artists and the artistic director.

“They are to be congratulated. I hope they continue this work so more people can learn, because we learn a lot from them,” she said. “I didn’t see anything out of tune, there were no mistakes—I thought they were fantastic!”

Mr. Vargas added that he was particularly inspired by the courage and determination behind the production.

“It is their courage to stage this performance, and their will to revive the values of Chinese dance and folklore,” he said.

He concluded by expressing his admiration for the artistic director and the mission of the company.

“He truly deserves congratulations, especially for his determination to revive these traditions and to bring and spread these cultural values through the performance,” Mr. Vargas said. “These values are presented exceptionally well in this show. May he continue like this.”
