WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—Retired business owner Steve Voellinger attended Shen Yun for the first time on the evening of Feb. 2, at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach—and left spellbound. “Absolutely phenomenal, very enlightening … a lot of history,” he said, adding that he and his wife thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Based in New York, Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

Mr. Voellinger was especially impressed by the dancers’ skill and physical ability. He marveled at the performers’ technical excellence, noting how remarkable it was to see such athleticism and grace on stage.

Beyond the breathtaking dance, Mr. Voellinger praised Shen Yun for being both entertaining and educational. “It was very interesting,” he noted, reflecting on the historical narratives woven into the performance. “I knew nothing about the history of China and all of the persecution and all that. So, it was very interesting.”
Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture, allowing audiences around the world to experience China before communism.

The stories on stage convey profound messages and spiritual themes, which resonated deeply with Mr. Voellinger, who describes himself as spiritual but not religious. He said the show’s spiritual dimension enhanced his appreciation of the performance.

Accompanying him was his wife, Olga Voellinger, a retired JPMorgan Chase branch manager. Born in Cuba, Ms. Voellinger felt a powerful emotional connection to Shen Yun’s presentation of China before communism.

“It was very inspiring. I was born in Cuba, so this is very meaningful to me,” she said.

The uplifting experience left the Voellingers feeling inspired and full of hope. Both enthusiastically encouraged audiences to experience the show for themselves.

“Everyone should come and see it,” Mr. Voellinger said.

“I would say they have to come see it. It’s just the colors, the acting—it’s beautiful. They have to understand it’s good for them to see this part of China,” Ms. Voellinger added.
