BIRMINGHAM, UK—On Jan. 4, Dr. Mathew Nadakal and his wife attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham. Dr. Nadakal said he and his wife had high expectations, and they were very satisfied.

Every performance in Shen Yun’s “China before communism” features hosts who introduce and explain each piece in both English and Mandarin. “The presenters, they are all very, very good. They are doing a very excellent job,” Dr. Nadakal said.

Dr. Nadakal especially enjoyed the interaction between the performers and Shen Yun’s landscapes, thanks to its patented use of screen animation.

“It’s all very exciting, seeing it coming from the [backdrop].”
Shen Yun’s dancers, who are based in New York, engage in gymnastic moves honed from rigorous training. “They’re all dancing very well, [and use] gymnastics,” Dr. Nadakal said. Modern gymnastics originated from movements in classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun’s website explains.

Dr. Nadakal was also impressed by the technical level of the dance. “I was expecting Chinese dancers with a high technical level, so they are doing excellent,” he said.

Shen Yun performances are all accompanied by a live orchestra that combines both Eastern and Western instruments. Dr. Nadakal said the orchestra was “very good—we can feel it.”

He and his wife noted the different sounds of the Eastern and Western strings. “We can see the difference in the strings and the orchestra.”

Singers trained in the bel canto method perform original music. Dr. Nadakal especially enjoyed the tenor’s singing. “He has an excellent voice.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the traditional Chinese culture of 5,000 years before communism, which Dr. Nadakal supports.

Asked if he would recommend Shen Yun to friends and family, the doctor said, “ Oh, yes. I’m already recommending it.”

“It’s very, very colorful. They are all doing very well, so I am very happy to see it and will recommend it to my friends,” he said.
