HOUSTON—Vicky Ruelas and Victor Ortega’s schedule didn’t allow them to see Shen Yun Performing Arts when it was in Mexico, so they were very happy to be able to catch the performance this season in Houston at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts.

“We were very excited when we saw the pictures and found out that the show is going to be here,” said Ms. Ruelas, a teacher.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“All is excellent. Dance, music, and the passion of the dancer. It’s excellent,” said Mr. Ortega, a lawyer.

Ms. Ruelas was a ballet dancer for three years, and she loved every movement of Shen Yun’s dancers.

“The technique—it’s absolutely gorgeous, perfect. I love every movement. They showed the passion in every movement, so I really was excited all through the show,” Ms. Ruelas said.

Shen Yun’s website states that “Classical Chinese dance training includes three main components—technical skill, form, and bearing,” which is one of the many ways that classical Chinese dance is different from ballet.

“It’s perfect. The technique, I was very impressed with the movements, how they make it look so easy. I know that’s a lot of years of practice. I was very impressed with the perfection of their technique,” Ms. Ruelas said.

Classical Chinese dance is known for its incredible potential in expression. The movements allow Shen Yun to retell stories from Chinese history, myth, and legend.

“I love the story because I don’t know about the culture, and it’s interesting because the dancers—they don’t talk—transmit their history and the culture and the tradition, and it was fantastic,” Mr. Ortega said.

Throughout Shen Yun’s performance, audience members can witness the arrival of the Creator as well as other divine beings who come to the aid of those in need.

“I like that it’s very inspirational, the part that is religious. I think the part of how the dancers reflect how thankful they are with their beliefs. We have to thank our creator. Even if we may not believe in the same, it’s the same God for us,” Ms. Ruelas said.
