NEW YORK—Shawn and Linda Alfano came for an artistic experience but found so much more at Shen Yun Performing Arts at the David H. Koch Theater on March 28.

Mr. Alfano, an attorney, enjoyed the educational aspects and said, “I was coming for the art, which it does have; I can also see some explanations behind the culture, which is nice.”

Shen Yun features singers who perform original music sung in Chinese, with an English translation projected on the backscreen. Mrs. Alfano enjoyed the singer and the lyrics. “I love the message that she was singing about. I thought that was lovely.”

“It brings faith, more of a human type of approach—your faith and what you believe in—and it was touching. The way she sang it and was reading the words, it was moving,” she said.

Mr. Alfano was inspired by how Falun Dafa cultivators and characters in other stories stand up for their beliefs. “That is a theme I see that is inspirational: standing up for their faith.”

He appreciated the story “Scholarly Affection,” where a young woman did everything possible to obtain an education, going so far as to disguise herself as a boy to enter school.

“The story, like the woman who was standing up for her right to an education, I can see the theme of standing up to monsters throughout. It’s always monsters in the world that we need to stand up to,” he said.

Joseph Scali, a financial consultant, and his wife, Jennifer, were very impressed. “It’s so much better than we expected,” he said. “It just gave us a different look into the Chinese culture with all the dancing and the music. It’s fantastic.”

Shen Yun tours the world to share 5,000 years of traditional culture from “China before communism.” People who see it have a better understanding of Chinese culture. The communist regime bans Shen Yun from appearing in China.

“I was totally surprised during the first half of the performance. I was asking myself if this is something that President Xi Jinping would see,” Mr. Scali said. “But I didn’t know that this is something that would never be seen in China”—at least under communism.

Mr. Scali saw the capacity crowd at the performance. “Yes, it’s a full house, and I think it just opened my eyes to a lot of things about what’s going on in the world, in China, and here in the States. We love it, and it’s great to be here.”
