NORFOLK, Virginia—Shen Yun Performing Arts presented the beauty of “China before communism” to audience members in Norfolk on April 23. Through vibrant dance, music, and unique storytelling, Shen Yun aims to remind the world of the essence of China’s 5,000-year-old culture that has been lost in today’s China.

Stanley Ray, a company CEO, said, “Just seeing some of the performance, I was just struck in awe. And then, it was a combination of the orchestra, the choreography, the visual effects.”

Tyler Risty, a Navy SEAL, said, “I came for the dancing, but the music is actually intriguing me the most. It’s super beautiful. But the costumes and just seeing it in person is great.”

Mr. Ray said, “The combination of the regular instruments along with the Chinese instruments, it was just beautiful. I loved it. I'll give it a 10/10.”

Shen Yun brings ancient legends and historical stories vividly to life on stage, with audience members saying they admired the dancers’ exceptional skill and dedication to their craft.

“I thought it was fantastic being a prior dancer myself,” Mr. Ray said. “I think people underestimate those moves there. They make it seem effortless. And it’s so much training and strength that goes into just a simple jump and glide.”

Mr. Risty said, “My four kids are all competitive gymnasts, and we’re just in awe watching them. Could our kids be like this someday? Their elegance and grace is great.”

Shen Yun also presents traditional themes such as faith and spirituality—values that are found at the heart of traditional Chinese culture.

“Obviously we love it. It falls right in with our Christian values. As a family, we homeschool our children, and the importance of God being shown through the performance is wonderful,” Mr. Risty said.

“Being a spiritual person myself, and especially with what we have going on in the world today, I thought it’s a much needed message,” Mr. Ray said. “It’s an awesome message.”

Gary Stewart, a pastor and author, said, “This is inspiring. Everyone should come see it. Even if you have to save your nickels, pennies, dimes, the quarters, whatever you can save, it’s worth every penny that you can to come see the show.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Newark, New Jersey, from April 29–May 3.
