NEWARK, New Jersey—Shen Yun Performing Arts gave a performance at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on May 2. With story-based dance, vibrant costumes, and a patented digital backdrop, Shen Yun took audiences on a journey through ancient China.

“It is fantastic, unbelievable. The timing, the colors, the dances, the stories; it’s excellent,” Jane Larimer, a company CEO, said. “It has incredible dance and acrobatics, the tumbling, it’s everybody working together almost as one.”

Patrick Mottola, an attorney, said, “It was a nice mix of traditional Chinese and also some more modern. I like the way the screen interacted with the performers, it was very seamless. And it added a lot of depth to the performance.”

“No wording, no speaking, but we get all the story without the words. We get the emotions, we get the cry, we get the laughter. No words, just expressions by choreography, dance, music, and soul,” business owner Ronit Weinkrantz said.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from “China before communism,” a culture the communist regime has been seeking to destroy since taking power in China since 1949.

Mr. Mottola said, “I think the message is one of hope and spirituality and tradition, and I think that’s very important. Particularly, there are a lot of oppressive regimes in the world and I think that the human spirit aligned with God is something, it’s a message that we all need to hear and be reminded of.”

Ms. Larimer said, “It gives such historical context through the line of the stories and the religions and the importance of culture. It’s breathtaking.”

Mr. Mottola said, “I had a great time. This is my third time seeing the show, and it’s different every year, so that’s why I came. It’s very colorful. I love the colors and all the talented dancers and the energy and the very positive message. I love the music, it was a very uplifting experience.”

Jack Brown, a retired bank vice president, said, “The participants are excellent ambassadors of Chinese culture. If you wanted to learn about Chinese culture, this would be a great opportunity.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Stamford, Connecticut, from May 7–10.
