HOUSTON, Texas—On Dec. 27, Jackie Moy, chief legal counsel of energy company Energy Transfer LP, attended Shen Yun’s evening performance with her friends at Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston. The artistry and message of the New York-based production made a strong impression on her.
“The costumes were beautiful. The music was awesome. The choreography was beautiful. It was all great,” she said.
Ms. Moy was particularly impressed by the Shen Yun Orchestra, which seamlessly blends Chinese and Western instruments into a single ensemble—a rare accomplishment. “The music was awesome. I love the mixture of the Asian and Western,” she said.
She was also enchanted by the vibrant colors of Shen Yun’s costumes. From the wide, flowing sleeves to the traditional long robes, each costume is handcrafted with exquisite detail, adding to the overall visual appeal of the performance.
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Its mission is to revive China’s traditional culture, a civilization that emphasized virtue, moral conduct, and reverence for the divine. This culture was nearly destroyed by decades of communist rule.
Ms. Moy resonated strongly with this message. “Definitely, atheism is not a good thing,” she remarked.
She further noted that the message Shen Yun tries to convey to the world is “to look for the divine in all of us and to search for something—to keep aspiring to something greater.”
“Actually, I loved the spiritual part of this. I’m very spiritual myself, so I absolutely appreciate the deep feelings that went into the show,” she said. “I do think we are from a Creator, a supreme being … [I do believe] there’s something bigger than all of us—something we all aspire to that’s greater than us, and we’ll never get there without our Creator.
“That’s what we aspire to, and I think the beauty in what you do is part of what expresses the divine.”
