PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil—Carmem Ferrão and Josue Hoewell saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on May 9, 2026, at Teatro FIERGS.

“I find it stunning—the colors, the technique, the perfection, the synchrony ... it truly is an unmissable spectacle,” said Ms. Ferrão, a business owner.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism” and to revive people’s connection to 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I think that everything that brings back tradition, culture, and this spiritual side is very important for today’s world,” Ms. Ferrão said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“Very good, very beautiful, great technique, and very graceful. It really is impressive,” said Mr. Hoewell, a doctor.

Aside from classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun’s artists are also trained in various Chinese ethnic and folk dance styles.

Ms. Ferrão found it difficult to pick one dance that stood out for her.

“The entire piece is fantastic. The harmony, the lightness with which they dance, the technique ... it’s truly beautiful,” she said.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The technology’s versatility allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“The integration of the background screen with the performers entering and exiting the screen—that is very interesting,” Mr. Hoewell said.

Founded in New York in 2006, Shen Yun was established by elite artists who fled persecution by the Chinese Communist Party. This season marks Shen Yun’s 20th anniversary.

“Congratulations! Keep it up, bringing this joy and this perfection to the whole world,” Ms. Ferrão said.

“Congratulations on the dedication and the effort, which we can see is very great,” Mr. Hoewell added.
