SEVILLE, Spain—Television producer Clochu Moreno Martínez and professional flamenco dancer Irene Judas Cruz were captivated by Shen Yun Performing Arts during its debut in Seville on March 24.
Mr. Moreno Martínez said, “We absolutely loved it! It was my Christmas gift for her, and we are both delighted. She told me we had to see Shen Yun—it’s incredible, and you will not regret it.” Mr. Moreno Martínez, a prominent TV producer in Spain, has worked on popular programs including “Beautiful People” and “Andalusia in the Festival”, earning industry awards and recognition.
Ms. Judas Cruz, a celebrated flamenco dancer active across Andalusia, regularly performs in Seville’s premier theaters and has also appeared on television.
Shen Yun Dancers Show Precision and Serenity
Ms. Judas Cruz was immediately struck by the Shen Yun dancers’ unique style. “I loved the way the dancers move—it’s completely different from anything else,” she said. “Their movements are soft, precise, and perfectly arranged. The orchestra’s oriental music is beautiful, and every movement flows with it. Watching them is a total mental and visual escape.”
She noted that the performers radiate happiness and tranquility. “Even as flamenco dancers, we are taught to maintain inner calm, but Shen Yun artists elevate it. Their joy and serenity are remarkable,” she said.
The name Shen Yun means “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Headquartered in New York, the company is dedicated to classical Chinese dance—an ancient tradition celebrated as one of the world’s most comprehensive dance systems. With its extraordinary expressive power, this art form enables Shen Yun to vividly retell stories from China’s history, literary heritage, and its rich tapestry of myths and legends.
Ms. Judas Cruz was also inspired by the discipline behind the performance. “The female dancers have extraordinary flexibility; the male dancers’ leaps and spins are difficult. It’s clear they train tirelessly—every day, every month, every year—even when others are on vacation. Watching them motivates me to practice harder. It’s extremely demanding but incredibly beautiful, and when you achieve it, you feel proud.”
Window into Chinese Culture
For the couple, Shen Yun reveals the richness of Chinese culture through wordless storytelling.
“The opening with long-sleeved dances and divine beings descending from heaven was breathtaking,” Mr. Moreno Martínez recalled. “It’s a completely different dance form and presentation—unique but highly professional.”
Ms. Judas Cruz added, “The dancers tell different stories in segments, and you understand each part without words. It’s beautiful. You can see their devotion, calm meditation, and teamwork—a very humble culture expressed through art.”
Ironically, while Shen Yun brings traditional Chinese culture to audiences around the world, it remains unable to perform in China. Against this backdrop, Mr. Moreno Martínez emphasized the importance of cultural preservation and cross-cultural understanding.
“Some parts of the performance cannot be performed in China due to restrictions, which makes witnessing it here even more important. Shen Yun offers a window into a culture that may seem distant but deserves our understanding. Art is a means of expressing emotions, freedom, and truth; everyone should have the chance to express themselves.”
Lasting Impression
Ms. Judas Cruz reflected on the broader lessons of the performance. “Shen Yun inspires patience, tolerance, calmness, and trust—trust in yourself, in your beliefs, and in others. That kind of love and understanding is often missing in our society,” she said.
Both intend to share the experience widely. “I will tell everyone to come with an open heart and mind,” Ms. Judas Cruz said. “Be willing to experience something extraordinary—different music, movement, and emotions. That’s what makes Shen Yun unforgettable.”
Mr. Moreno Martínez concluded, “I am amazed, delighted, and full of admiration for the artists. Congratulations to them, and I hope they continue bringing this performance to audiences around the world.”
