Shen Yun Performing Arts graced the stage at the Edinburgh Playhouse on Feb. 10 and 11, with a mission to revive the essence of the 5,000-year-old traditional culture of China before communism.

Audience members said they were impressed by the stories portrayed on stage and the level of artistry.

“I thought it was moving. It gave you an insight into what was going on historically and in modern-day China,” said David Dunn, a managing director of a firm.

“I have to say it’s truly lived up to expectations. It’s a truly phenomenal show. The colors and just the quality of the production is just right up there in the front row,” said Mino Manekshaw, a retired engineer.

Shen Yun brings ancient legends and historical characters to life on stage through music and dance. Theatregoers said they resonated with the values in the stories.

“I think when you look at the folklore that was expressed in those little cameos, they’re no different to what various cultures teach. So we have that same fundamental approach to life, what’s good and the battle between good and evil,” Mr. Manekshaw said.

“They’re timeless values,” said Mary Carol, a business owner. “We have them in the Celtic tradition as well. So it’s something that’s in every culture, when you look at your culture, your home culture, whatever your own culture is, when you look at that properly, then you see that these same values are there and they are the sustainable values.”

“I think it’s important to remember where you come from,” Mr. Dunn said.”You should always be ... glued up to where you came from, and should always honor the sovereign state you came from.”

He added, “I think it’s one of those things you’ve got to experience yourself absolutely. I think it’s one of those things you’ve got to sit there, take it in yourself, and make your own decision. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Bill Tebay, a retired director, said, “I think it’s great that we have storytelling embodying the current culture, really. In a time of a lot of change in the world to see those values and those cultures embodied in that type of show is fantastic. Quite comforting.”

Sonja Tebay, a retired teacher, added, “And to bring it out to the outside of China is very good, too. A lot of people don’t understand or realize what the actual culture is really like.”
