AUSTIN, Texas—“You can’t take your eyes off the stage,” said Scott McDonald, an attorney, during intermission after watching Shen Yun Performing Arts at The Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin on Dec. 29.

Mr. McDonald attended the performance with his children as his daughter had been studying China and world history at school, and the family was glad to see the traditional Chinese culture come through in the performance.

Based in New York, Shen Yun was established by artists from all around the world to revive 5,000 years of a divinely inspired culture through performing arts.

“I think it’s fantastic. It’s wonderful,” Mr. McDonald said. “It’s a very spiritual culture and people.”

Modern China isn’t depicted the same way, Mr. McDonald said, so it was great to see Shen Yun bring the culture to the rest of the world. As the emcees explained, China is a place Shen Yun isn’t able to perform.

“This is refreshing to see this and know about Chinese people from all over the world coming together. That, to me, is really neat,” Mr. McDonald said. “Part of the performance is that Chinese people from all over coming together to put this performance together.”

The stories Shen Yun told through dance range from the early dynasties to China today, but even when there was sadness in a tale, everything ended on a happy note, Mr. McDonald said. “So it’s very uplifting.”

“It was beautiful, it was wonderful,” he concluded. “It was a very unique performance.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has four touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit Shen Yun Performing Arts.
