After watching Shen Yun Performing Arts, Atlanta audience member Larry Chambless said the performance left him reflecting on values such as “treating everyone with respect” and “looking out for one’s fellow human beings.”

On the evening of Jan. 27, Mr. Chambless, a company manager, attended the opening performance of Shen Yun at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta with his girlfriend, Heidi Roy, a practicing psychotherapist. Ms. Roy shared that the tickets had been a Christmas gift from Mr. Chambless the previous year.

Ms. Roy spoke enthusiastically about the performance, describing it as a showcase of exceptional artistry and talent.

“Beautiful artistry, incredible talent—the synchronization of the artists was remarkable,” she said.

She was also struck by the depth of the themes presented, including what she perceived as thoughtful social commentary conveyed through the program’s narratives.

“There was an interesting component of what I would call political or social commentary,” she said. “It was surprising, but done in a really appropriate way—interesting for our times, and very well presented.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, dedicated to reviving China’s traditional culture as it existed before decades of communist rule nearly destroyed it.

Ms. Roy said she was particularly impressed by the dancers’ technical mastery and visual presentation.

“They were clearly well trained,” she said. “The costuming was beautiful, and the way the costumes were used in the dancing—along with the skill and acrobatics—was truly extraordinary.”

She added that she was deeply moved by the beauty of China’s history as expressed through dance and costume, and noted that she was especially captivated by a classical dance featuring flowing water sleeves.

Ms. Roy also praised Shen Yun’s live orchestra, which seamlessly and harmoniously blends Eastern and Western musical traditions—a rare accomplishment in human history.

“The orchestra was incredible—absolutely first rate,” she said.

Shen Yun’s patented digital backdrop likewise left a strong impression on her.

“It was fascinating,” she said. “The way the performers came in and out of the screen was really well done. It was surprising at first. It’s really a wonderful use of technology.”

Mr. Chambless echoed her appreciation and noted that the erhu solo was a special moment.

“That instrument was amazing,” he said. “Two strings, and they could get that much tone out of it—it was incredible.”

While he also enjoyed the full orchestra, Mr. Chambless said the traditional instruments stood out the most for him.

“The orchestra was great,” he said, “but what I liked best were the traditional instruments—hearing sounds so different from what we Americans are used to.”

Reflecting on the overall themes of the performance, Mr. Chambless said Shen Yun presented a rich and diverse picture of Chinese culture.

“I thought it was really interesting that they were trying to cover so many parts of Chinese culture,” he said. “Different regions, different eras—from the Mongolian steppe to the northern regions—it gave a very diverse view of the country.”
Through its series of short, story-based dances, Shen Yun conveyed traditional values in a way Mr. Chambless found both educational and meaningful.

“All of the stories were trying to convey a moral,” he said. “It actually reminded me of the stained glass windows in European cathedrals, which depicted religious events so people could learn morals visually.”

He summarized the overarching message of the performance as one centered on compassion and respect.

“Treating everyone with respect, no matter who they are, and looking out for your fellow man,” he said. “I think those are the underlying themes in all of them.”

Ms. Roy agreed wholeheartedly, adding that the performance left her fully immersed and deeply satisfied.

“It was really remarkable,” she said. “I completely enjoyed it.”
