PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil—Ana Faviero and Ricardo Vasconcellos saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on May 9, 2026 at Teatro FIERGS.

“It was beyond what I expected. I already cried in the first act. It felt like I was in a dream; I was moved the whole time. It was very much worth it. Next year I’m coming again,” said Ms. Faviero, an architect.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“The whole spectacle is so light—fantastic. At the same time, it is vigorous, and the lightness of the dancers is wonderful,” said Mr. Vasconcellos, an architect.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“It goes beyond dance. The light, the whole visual part—it’s wonderful. I think for the dancers to show everything they showed us—I think it’s essential in everyone’s life. Seeing a spectacle like this each time is a wonderful thing for us. And today they made us feel like better people,” Mr. Vasconcellos said.

Shen Yun’s website states that Classical Chinese dance training includes three main components—technical skill, form, and bearing —which is one of the many ways classical Chinese dance differs from ballet.

Ms. Faviero shared that she enjoyed the dance, ‘Water Sleeves.’

“The peacock that came with that mist—I loved everything,” she said.

Founded in New York in 2006, Shen Yun was established by elite artists who fled persecution by the Chinese Communist Party.

“I think we have to value what comes from abroad, but at the same time value our own culture as Brazilians. This spectacle that you showed here today is of a fundamental beauty for the whole world,” Mr. Vasconcellos said.

This year marks Shen Yun’s 20th anniversary.

“May they be very happy, may they continue brightening the spectacles and opening people’s minds. I loved it,” Ms. Faviero said.
