AMNÉVILLE, France—Daniel Welsch is a restaurant owner. After years of missing Shen Yun Performing Arts, he was finally able to see the performance on Dec. 18.

“I’ve wanted to see it for several years, but I haven’t been able to. And this year, since the dates worked out well, I was able to see it, and I absolutely do not regret it,” Mr. Welsch said.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture, allowing audiences around the world to experience China before communism.
“I find the show very beautiful. It’s something I had never seen before. And it’s true that Chinese culture is very interesting. I don’t know whether I was already interested in it or not, but I learned a lot of things,” Mr. Welsch said.

Throughout Shen Yun’s performance, traditional values such as filial piety and loyalty are presented on stage through dance.

“They are values we also have here. They speak to everyone, and I think they should be emphasized much more today,” Mr. Welsch said.

He added that seeing Shen Yun gave him a break from the ups and downs of daily society.

“It creates a beautiful break from all the current events, from this world that isn’t very beautiful today,” he said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

Mr. Welsch said that he did not know about classical Chinese dance, but he thought it was very beautiful.

“I find it really very beautiful. It’s very different from what we’re used to seeing—here in France. It’s something very interesting and very beautiful to watch. The costumes are very beautiful, and the music is very beautiful,” he said.
Classical Chinese dance requires its artists to master bearing, form, technique, and tumbling techniques before becoming truly adept at this dance form.

“It’s more acrobatic—much more acrobatic than what we might call, in quotation marks, French classical dance. It’s much more acrobatic. And you can see that everything is measured to the millimeter, everything is precise, everything is structured, and everything is really in its place,” Mr. Welsch said.

As Shen Yun approaches its 20th anniversary, Mr. Welsch said he hoped “they’ll continue for another 20 years with shows as beautiful as the one I saw tonight.”
