CINCINNATI—Three generations of ladies attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Aronoff Center for the Arts on Jan. 30—Florence E Brock, her daughter Deborah Brock-Blanks, and Deborah’s granddaughter. All were delighted with the performance showcasing classical Chinese dance and music.

New York-based Shen Yun brings 5,000 years of Chinese civilization to life on stage, through classically trained dancers, award-winning singers, hundreds of hand-made colorful costumes, and a full orchestra comprised of both Eastern and Western instruments.

Ms. Brock, an actress and dancer herself, said she loved the performance, and commented on its beauty and grace.

Impressed by the demanding technical aspect of the dance, Ms. Brock-Blanks said, “Things were so fluid and [there was] so much precision [in the dances]; just graceful, and the costuming enhanced the movements.”

Ms. Brock-Blanks dances ballet, tap, modern, and African dance. She praised the technical skills of the male dancers.

“I loved the men because of the … flips, the … turns and everything,” she said.

Ms. Brock-Blanks also commented on the deeper meaning behind the beauty and challenging techniques of the dancing. She related to “the spirituality with the singers, the baritone and the tenor, and the story of the reincarnation and then how it wove all the way back to modern times.”

Pointing to the spirituality in the performance, Ms. Brock-Blanks outlined some of the themes she saw in the show, including “heaven and the spirit and being earthly beings, and the circle of life.”

Like many performances with deeper meaning, Shen Yun will evoke conversation. “ I have some friends coming tomorrow and we’re going to kind of sit around and discuss it. I would recommend it for anybody to come see [it],” she said.

Ms. Brock-Blank’s mother, Ms. Brock, said she has also been around dancers all of her life, and so she appreciated Shen Yun even more. “It is just wonderful; the colors were just dynamic,” she said.
