AMNÉVILLE, France—Retired lawyer and Spanish tenor Francisco Javier Carrillo, who performs in Zarzuela concerts, was spending his Christmas vacation in Nancy, France, when he decided to attend Shen Yun Performing Arts’ final matinee at Galaxie Amnéville on Dec. 21.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen it, and it’s wonderful. Today’s performance, it’s almost unbelievable,” Mr. Carrillo exclaimed.

“The use of color, the visual effects were incredible. And the choreography is sensational. Many things caught my attention, especially the stringed instrument. The orchestra is excellent. Everything … it’s a sensational show.”

Endowed with 5,000 years of history, China was once known as the “Land of the Divine,” reflecting a belief that the ancient civilization was inspired by the heavens. For millennia, its people believed that by living in line with the Way of Heaven, they would be blessed by the divine.

Indeed, for thousands of years, the country prospered. However, after the communist takeover and the spread of atheism, much of this traditional culture was systematically destroyed. Today, New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to bring back the beauty and goodness of “China before communism.”

Mr. Carrillo said that Shen Yun’s presentation of modern China’s persecution of the people of faith was a good thing, as “these issues can be talked about.”

“It must be known what’s happening,” he said.

As a fellow musician, Mr. Carrillo was particularly intrigued by Shen Yun’s singers and paid close attention to the baritone, who he said had “a very pleasant voice.”

“Very good, very good ... It’s a lyrical voice,” he said. “I know Chinese singers may look small, but then such powerful voices come out ... The baritone—I heard his voice clearly. Strong, strong, strong.”

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in classical bel canto—a style known for its ability to create tones of unparalleled beauty and purity. Through original compositions and lyrics, the artists invite the listener to explore the deeper meaning of life.

“Humanity, since the first appearance of man, has had both good and bad,” Mr. Carrillo said, reflecting on the message in the song. “What’s important is to gather the good things to move toward a better, more perfect world, because illness and evil bring nothing good.”

Mr. Carrillo said he was eager to recommend Shen Yun to his friends and that he would love to see the performance again. “When I return to Spain, whenever I can see it, I will go,” he said.
After its performances in Amnéville and Bordeaux in France, Shen Yun’s International Company will tour other cities across Europe, including Poland, Italy, Latvia, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, and other cities in France.

The International Company is one of eight equally large companies that, in 2026, will perform simultaneously across five continents for one million people.
