GENEVA—After attending the Shen Yun performance, Swiss Sen. Mauro Poggia shared a profound impression: that of a rare moment when human values regain their rightful place. When interviewed after the show, he spoke of how much this experience had benefited him.
“It’s a great pleasure to see the company return here. We haven’t seen them in Geneva for a few years. I hope we will see them regularly every year now,” Mr. Poggia said after the performance.
“I think it’s good to have human values coming back, especially in times like these,” he said.
In a world he described as troubled, where “human values are disappearing” and “solidarity is no longer present,” he said he believes that this type of show plays an essential role: “It feels good to have values expressed in this way.”
These values are also expressed through music. The Shen Yun orchestra is the first in the world to successfully and sustainably combine a Western orchestra with classical Chinese instruments.
Universal Message Beyond Religious Beliefs
When asked what today’s society could learn from this show, the senator emphasized one powerful idea: that of moral responsibility.Regardless of individual beliefs, it is important to recognize that ultimately, we are accountable for our actions. Harmful deeds do not go unpunished, and those who engage in wrongdoing should be aware that one day they will be held accountable.
For him, the values promoted in Shen Yun—kindness, tolerance, and respect—are universal.
“These are human values that enable us to respect others and also earn their respect. They allow us to express what is deepest within ourselves and to earn the respect of those around us,” he said.
Based in New York, Shen Yun’s artists are highly trained in classical Chinese dance, a discipline with a history dating back several millennia. Characterized by its athleticism and expressive power, this form of dance is the origin of many jumping and acrobatic techniques that are now associated with gymnastics or acrobatics, but which actually originate with this ancient art.
Beauty as a Vector of Values
Through dance, music, and storytelling on stage, Shen Yun artists’ mission is to revive the splendor and beauty of 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.“When you find yourself surrounded by this traditional music and these traditional instruments. It’s a moment without words, without movement, where you refocus on your inner values,” he said, adding that it was “a feast for the eyes.”
