SAN FRANCISCO—Tom Mancino and Thelma Mancino came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts on Dec. 31 with Harriet Ross, who is 100 years old. They say Ms. Ross was their inspiration to come see true Chinese culture.

“I love the colors of the costumes and the way they flowed. It was really nice,” said Ms. Mancino, an integrated health practitioner.

Ms. Mancino and Mr. Mancino brought Ms. Ross to see Shen Yun because Ms. Ross had spent a month in China.

“She loves China, and I thought, ‘she’s 100 years old,’ and we wanted to bring her to Shen Yun because she’s spent a month in China. She’s our inspiration for coming,” Ms. Mancino shared.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“She enjoyed it. It wasn’t what she expected ... but she said it was beautiful and she loved it,” Ms. Mancino said.

Shen Yun’s website states that all the amazing technical moves seen on its stage are not from gymnastics or acrobatics, they actually originate from classical Chinese dance.

“I did gymnastics when I was little. So, I thought those were all gymnastic moves, but it’s traditional Chinese dance. That was very interesting ….  I definitely enjoyed all the acrobatics and everything going on,” Ms. Mancino said.

Shen Yun is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.
“The poise, the grace, the flow, the music, the stories … it’s so classically Chinese,” said Mr. Mancino, an investment banker.
