NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.—Chinese culture is derived from an expansive area of land and 5,000 years of history. Many audience members of Shen Yun Performing Arts have also visited China; among them is Cary Fechter, MD, the founder of Cardio-Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Fechter said he loved his time in China but commented that the artistry in Shen Yun was incomparable.

“I love the performance, just like everyone around me. I happened to be with very intelligent viewers,” Dr. Fechter said.

“I’ve been to China. I’ve been to the Forbidden City, and I’ve been to lots of places. But this was the most beautiful [dance], better than the Bolshoi, much better than the Beijing ballet,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun is trained in classical Chinese dance. An art form that is more comprehensive and more expressive than ballet.
I thought the women’s hand movements were so graceful. I was watching their hands all the time. They were magnificent,” he said.
According to the Shen Yun website, classical Chinese dance combines elements of martial arts and Chinese theater. But the dance itself has thousands of years of history.

“The men were very masculine, yet very graceful. That’s a hard combination to have. And I could tell that everyone was very proud—very proud to be part of the program,” he said.

Dr. Fechter was impressed that there are eight companies touring the world.

Prevailing Over Communism

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of culture, a culture before communism. The artists strive to share that Chinese culture is a deep and spiritual one, very different from what the ruling communist regime promotes.

“I thought the main message was the human spirit and God’s Spirit prevails over any communism, over any type of suppression of thought,” Dr. Fechter said.

“This type of program, if it goes all around the world, will convey a message that is greater than communism. And I think the Chinese people want it,” he said. “I think the mainland wants to be free and be able to express themselves.”

The name, Shen Yun, means the beauty of divine beings dancing. In Shen Yun, Dr. Fechter said he saw, “A combination of splendor, color, grace, and a spiritual message that we are all one person under a god or a great Creator, and we return to him. We get our chance to bloom like these beautiful young ladies, and then we move on.”
