BALTIMORE—Robert Kennick, a retired musician from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at The Hippodrome Theatre on April 29.
Mr. Kennick played percussion instruments in orchestras, including drums, xylophone, marimba, and cymbals, for 40 years.
Of the performance, Mr. Kennick said, “Oh, marvelous, marvelous. I love it,” and noted the erhu musician. “That lady with a two string instrument, that was really something else. I really enjoyed that,” he said.
With his music background, Mr. Kennick commented on the erhu: “I have heard about that instrument, but I never heard it played. And so now I know what it sounds like. And the different sounds that she can get out of it. It’s very interesting.”
“The whole show is absolutely marvelous, so good. To see graceful moves on the stage [is nice],” he said. "The modern stage has this jumping around, and hopping around all over the place. It’s so nice to see a graceful move from the past. You know that it is tied to God. This is even more graceful than American ballet. When I think of ballet, and I think of this, I prefer this Shen Yun.”
Of the performers’ dancing abilities, he said: “The skills in there were fabulous. [They] have got one leg up here, one leg straight up there. Oh my goodness, it is marvelous, marvelous.”
“I hope [Shen Yun] keeps going,” he said. “I mean, I don’t know how much longer I have to live, but I hope I can see another show again sometime.”People say the show is deep, and they can feel something behind the movements on stage and the performance, the dancing, and the music speak to one’s heart, and Mr. Kennick agreed: “Oh, yes. Just sitting there in awe of what was going on. Taking it all in, trying to understand the moves and everything to get [the feeling] into my being, so to speak.”
Mr. Kennick spoke about what he thinks is the essence of Shen Yun: “It speaks of hope, in a way, because everything [the performers] do leads to something higher up in the mental world. I hope I’m a better person after this. It’s almost like a church service that lifts you up and puts you on a different plane in life.”
