KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—After watching the Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company’s premiere in Kaohsiung on the evening of March 13, Mr. Li Mingcheun, president of the Chinese Medicine Academic Cross-Strait Exchange Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and President of the Yunlin County Countrymen Association in Kaohsiung, highly praised the show. He exclaimed, “Very vivid! Really touching! Each piece of the program was closely related, as if we were in a worldly paradise. It was so beautiful and unforgettable.”

With his friends’ strong recommendation, Mr. Li came to learn that Shen Yun is the world’s premier Chinese dance and music company, and that it is something that everyone should see at least once. Otherwise, one would regret it. As a result, he saw the show with his wife. When interviewed after the show, he exclaimed, “Yes! Shen Yun is a pride of all Chinese. Viva, Shen Yun!” His reaction showed how much he liked Shen Yun.

Mr. Li expressed that the programs that impressed him the most were The Monkey King Triumphs, Monk Ji Gong Abducts the Bride, and Legend of the Brush. He explained, “The story of The Monkey King Triumphs is to show people that they need to behave decently to avoid being attacked by evil, and that evil would eventually be overpowered by righteousness, and it would be subdued as long as we side with justice.”

The dance The Monkey King Triumphs is the legend about one of Chinese history’s most beloved characters, the Monkey King, who springs to life in this adaptation of a scene from the 16th century novel Journey to the West. The protagonist, a Buddhist monk, is traveling to India in search of scriptures, joined by an ogre, a pig, and a miraculous monkey met en route. When a mountain detour leaves the monk alone and unguarded, he is set upon by a demon that assumes the guise of a temptress. With the Monkey King’s timely help, the demon was subdued and the monk was saved. The storyline reflects the melding of the magical, moral, and mundane so common in the traditional Chinese novel.

“These legendary stories are familiar to us. They are very educational, as they are the precious elements of authentic Chinese tradition with far-reaching cultural implications. They deserve to be treasured. It is very meaningful for Shen Yun to exquisitely present them through Chinese dance.”
