KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—Hongchang Zhu, the CEO of Kaohsiung Philharmonic Cultural and Arts Foundation, attended Shen Yun’s evening performance on March 1, at Chih—The Hall of Kaohsiung Cultural Center.

“I knew I made the right decision to come!” Mr. Zhu exclaimed.

He was stunned by the talent and skill of the artists. “The dancers and the musicians cooperated seamlessly with each other even when the tempo was very fast—they must be very skilled to achieve this level of precision.”

Mr. Zhu added that he thought the “performance is of a very high caliber.”

The last time he attended Shen Yun was a decade ago. He was happy to discover that “Shen Yun has since perfected their artistry. It’s so obvious to see their growth.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun was established in 2006 by a group of leading Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of the Chinese Communist Party. Under the regime’s violent rule, China’s 5,000 years of traditional culture was destroyed and atheism was imposed.

Yet for thousands of years, Chinese people were very spiritual and believed that their culture was a gift from the heavens. Shen Yun is now dedicated to reviving these traditions and showcasing to the world, through dance and music, the beauty China before communism.

Mr. Zhu thoroughly enjoyed this spiritual aspect of the performance and thought Shen Yun achieved the perfect balance.

“It wasn’t just about the arts, they also talked about faith,” he said. “We got just a taste—they don’t overwhelm you with information but the audiences can pick up, at a glance, what the artists were trying to tell them.”

Also in the audience was Kaohsiung City’s municipal advisor Mingxiao Wu. He said the evening’s performance was a comfort to his body, mind, and soul.

Shen Yun is presenting traditional Chinese culture to the whole world on their tour. The international audience can also get a taste of China’s beauty and finesse. That’s truly wonderful,” Mr. Wu said.
Referring to Shen Yun’s depiction of Falun Gong—an ancient spiritual practice whose followers uphold the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance—Mr. Wu said he felt moved by these tenets.
“We need to cultivate and improve ourselves based on these principles,” he said. “The vocalist mentioned it again in her song. It was explained very clearly—humans should refrain from doing evil deeds and we should not become too absorbed by fame and profit. This is a warning for people nowadays.”

For Mr. Wu, Shen Yun is not performing nearly enough shows in Taiwan. He hoped that more people will have the opportunity to attend.

“Shen Yun should also go to Pingtung, Hualien, and Taitung—that’s the back garden of Taiwan! They need to share this wonderful message with more people,” he said.
