CALGARY, Canada—After a five-show run in Vancouver, Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company is now headed to Calgary, the hometown of the world-renowned Calgary Stampede.
Calgary is the largest city in the Province of Alberta and was the first city in Canada to host the Olympic Winter Games back in 1988.
Calgary is also the home city of Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and minister of citizenship, immigration, and multiculturalism Jason Kenney, both of whom had issued letters earlier in the year welcoming Shen Yun Performing Arts to Canada.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, please accept my best wishes for a memorable experience,” wrote Mr. Harper for those attending Shen Yun.
“By attending an event such as Shen Yun Performing Arts, we are all given the opportunity to share and appreciate the various traditions of our families, friends and neighbours,” wrote Mr. Kenney.
Other federal MPs in Calgary have welcomed the show due to start at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Tuesday March 30.
“Calgarians are indeed fortunate to be able to witness once again this classical Chinese dance and musical extravaganza, which explores 5,000 years of traditional culture,” Calgary East MP Deepak Obhrai wrote in a statement.
Lee Richardson, MP from Calgary Centre, also praised Shen Yun for visiting Calgary.
“The Shen Yun Performing Arts preserves and promotes the tradition and beauty of the Chinese culture through many exciting elements including music, song, dance and the magic of storytelling,” he wrote.
A number of Calgary-based MLAs including David Swann, Moe Amery, Ron Liepert, Heather Forsyth, Kent Hehr, Rob Anderson, and Richard Marz also issued statements welcoming Shen Yun to their city.
“Shen Yun Performing Arts came into being with a vision of fostering a renaissance in Chinese culture. Four years later, the show has achieved that and so much more,” wrote David Swann, MLA, Calgary-Mountain View.
“What better way to celebrate the tradition of multiculturalism than to have such an internationally renowned troupe of artists performing for Albertans,” expressed Moe Amery, MLA, Calgary East.
Calgary Aldermen Jim Stevenson, Joe Connelly, Druh Farrell, and Andre Chabot also greeted Shen Yun and encouraged those attending the show.
“On behalf of the City of Calgary, it is with great pleasure that I extend the warmest of greetings and best wishes to the Shen Yun Performing Arts 2010 World Tour,” wrote Joe Connelly, Alderman, City of Calgary Ward 6.
“Calgarians will be awed by the beauty and human dignity expressed through this performance,” said Druh Farrell, Alderman, City of Calgary Ward 7.
City officials from the surrounding municipalities also expressed their pleasure for Shen Yun’s Calgary visit by issuing congratulatory letters.
“I am certain that everyone in attendance will enjoy this splendid celebration of Chinese heritage and culture,” wrote Truper McBride, Mayor of Cochrane.
Norman Boucher, Mayor of Medicine Hat and Judy Dahl, Mayor of Town of Olds, also issued welcome letters for the show.
The show was also welcomed to Calgary by a number of other public figures including Pat Cochrane, Chair of Calgary Board of Education and Heather Douglas, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.
