See Just How Complicated Our Smartphone Addiction Really Is

San Francisco resident Ivan Cash grew up in a household without a television, “which I resented as a kid,” he says. But now the 29-year-old interactive artist and filmmaker believes his screen-free childhood gave him “a critical lens through which to view the way media and technology affect us on a daily basis.”

 In Phone Life, a short film by Cash, we meet Matthew, a UX designer who is that rare inhabitant of the tech-centric Bay Area: Someone who doesn’t own an iPhone, doesn’t own an Android device, and never had a flip phone. Cash juxtaposes the fitness app– and Instagram-free experience of Matthew with that of Tess, a teenager who has owned a smartphone for several years.
