Pharmavite is recalling Nature Made vitamins over a possible Salmonella or Staph contamination, it announced on June 7.

The company, along with the FDA, is alerting customers and distributors nationwide to immediately remove the supplements from store shelves. The recalled products were distributed nationwide to various major retailers.

Pharmavite ordered the recall after it was discovered that Salmonella and/or Staphylococcus aureus testing were not completed properly on certain items.

“Pharmavite cares deeply about the health and safety of consumers and we apologize for any inconvenience,” the company said.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, fragile or elderly people, and individuals with weak immune systems. Healthy people who contract Salmonella usually experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Extreme cases may include arterial infections and arthritis.

Staph may lead to food poisoning. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, retching, abdominal cramping, and fatigue. Severe cases could cause headaches, muscle cramping, and transient changes in blood pressure and pulse rate.

Pharmavite is offering a refund for the purchased recalled items.
