Mom Who Didn’t Know She Was Pregnant Gives Birth While in Coma: Reports

An English woman who was placed in a coma after she suffered seizures woke up to discover that she gave birth to a baby girl.

Ebony Stevenson said she wasn’t suspicious that she was pregnant and was suffering from preeclampsia, a condition related to her pregnancy, Fox News reported.

Preeclampsia, which occurs in about 5 percent to 8 percent of pregnancies, affects the mother and unborn child.

According to the Preeclampsia Foundation, the condition typically occurs later in a woman’s pregnancy. It said that delivering the child is the best treatment.

“Waking up from a coma to be told I had been pregnant and had given birth to a baby girl was overwhelming to say the least,” Stevenson said, adding that she was diagnosed with uterus didelphys, which is an abnormality that causes women to be born with two uteruses.

That could be the reason why she didn’t realize she was pregnant.

Her mother and paramedics noticed a small bump and realized she was, in fact, pregnant, Fox reported.

She gave birth to her child, Elodie, at the Royal Oldham Hospital via C-section on Dec. 3.

“Meeting my baby was so surreal,” she was quoted as saying by Fox. “It felt like an out of body experience. I worried I wouldn’t bond with my daughter because I had no time to get my head around her arrival, but I think she’s amazing.”

Her mother, Sheree, cared for the girl as Stevenson was in a coma. She met her daughter three days later.

“When I woke up I remember the nurses telling me I had a baby, and before I knew it they’d put her on my chest,” she said.

She said, “It sounds awful now, but I asked them to take her away as I was so confused and sure they’d made a mistake. But my mum explained it all to me while the nurses were there and they gave my little girl back to me to hold properly for the first time.”

Elodie was born with a weight of 7 pounds and 10 ounces, The Independent reported.

“The doctors said that Elodie was a miracle baby, as women with her condition often struggle to conceive or carry to full-term,” her mother told the news outlet.

Woman Gives Birth to Seven Children

An Iraqi woman recently gave birth to septuplets naturally, according to news reports last week.

According to the Daily Mail, the unnamed woman gave birth in the Diyali Province of eastern Iraq, which is the first septuplet case in the Middle Eastern country.

The father, Youssef Fadl, said he and his wife weren’t planning to expand their family, and now they have 10 children, the Mail reported.

Preeclampsia

The American Pregnancy Association says that “preeclampsia is a condition that occurs only during pregnancy. Some symptoms of preeclampsia may include high blood pressure and protein in the urine, occurring after week 20 of pregnancy.”

Women older than 40 and women younger than 20 are more likely to develop it.

“If preeclampsia is not treated quickly and properly, it can lead to serious complications for the mother such as liver or renal failure and future cardiovascular issues,” according to the website.
