Being fully aware mentally yet unable to give any indication that you’re still conscious is the stuff horror films are made of.
Yet, that’s what happened to Martin Pistorius, a South African man who spent years trapped inside of his non-responsive body. His ordeal began when he was just 12 years old and started to lose his motor and cognitive skills.
At the time doctors told his parents that all they could do was keep him comfortable until he passed. He unexpectedly survived and within a couple of years regained the ability to see and hear things. By the age of 19 he had regained full consciousness. However, he had no way of letting the world know that.
After years of being subjected to endless Barney episodes and even hearing his mother’s tearful confession that she hoped he would die, he decided it was time to do everything he could to emerge.
Around 12 years after his harrowing experience began, he was finally able to move just enough to let people know he was still in there.
In the years since he’s gone on to get married and write his recently released memoir, ‘Ghost Boy: My Escape From A Life Locked Inside My Own Body’.
